Andreas Papapetrou is a composer, performer, researcher, music teacher and interdisciplinary artist. His compositional output includes works for various ensembles in different genres, ranging from solos to full symphonic orchestra works, as well as works of electroacoustic and electronic music, music for theatre, film and dance productions, sound installations and immersive environments. A classically trained pianist and accordionist, he focuses on contemporary music works, cross-arts performance and improvisation.

His works have been performed by the Trinity Laban Symphony Orchestra, the Fidelio Trio, the DissonArt Ensemble, the Athens Contemporary Music Ensemble, the CoMA Voices London, the Marson Harp Trio, the Solstice and Wu string quartets among others in various venues in the UK, Europe and the Middle East, including the Institute of Contemporary Arts, the National Maritime Museum, Barbican Exhibition Halls, the Colourscape, Athens Megaron, Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, Cyprus Theatre Organisation THOC and the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation. To date he has composed for, performed in and curated seven large-scale interdisciplinary performances of his own compositions, such as Everywhere (Nicosia Municipal Theatre, Nicosia International Festival, 2019), Reclaiming the Roof (Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, 2018), Sound and Seek (Colourscape Commission 2017, Clapham Common), Desmōtēs (BoCCF, 2017), The Sounding Museum (BoCCF, 2017), Exercise: Les Noces (Trinity Laban Parallax 09: Peckham Asylum, 2016), Out of thin air (Zero Wave: Old Finsbury Town Hall, 2016).

As a performer he has presented debut performances of several contemporary music works for solo piano or chamber music ensemble. He is a performing and recording musician within several ensembles, choirs and popular music bands including 6daExit, OPM, Negma, Trinity Laban Contemporary Music Group, Aristotle University Thessaloniki Choir, Hellenic College of Music Choir, Thessaloniki State Conservatory Choral Ensemble, Prinz Achmed Orchestra, Cyprus National Guard Philharmonic, Rebetiko Carnival, Travmaties Kanape and the Grendel Babies.

Born in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1984, he started studying music at an early age, receiving several scholarships and awards along the way. He graduated from the Hellenic College of Music in 2001 with a Piano Teaching Degree (Ptychion) with distinction. He continued his studies in Greece, graduating from the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki in 2008, with a Diploma in Piano Performance with distinction, and at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2009, acquiring his Ptychion (BA & MA Degree) in Composition with distinction. He then moved to London, where he studied composition at Trinity College of Music, acquiring his MMus in Composition with distinction in 2011. In 2016 he finished his PhD in Creative Practice - Composition (passed without amendments) at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, supervised by Dominic Murcott and Sophie Fuller.

He has studied music composition with Michalis Lapidakis, Panayiotis Kokoras, Errollyn Wallen, Stephen Montague and Dominic Murcott. He has studied piano performance with Elena Sophocleous, Emilia Tzima and Douglas Finch, accordion with Irinoula Constantinidou and singing with Yula Michail.

His awards and scholarships include: Eye Music Trust Music Commission (2017), Onassis Foundation Scholarship for Hellenes (2012-2015), Trinity Laban Conservatoire Silver Medal Composition Prize (2011), Trinity Laban Conservatoire MMus Prize (2011), A. G. Leventis foundation Scholarship (2009-2011), Nicolas Economou Foundation Scholarship for Music Studies (2010), Bratton Scholarship, Trinity College of Music (2009), 3rd prize in Evangelia Tjiarri International Piano competition (2001), Elli Makridou Award, Hellenic College of Music (2001), Kapsalis Music Prize, Pancyprian Gymnasium of Nicosia (2001), Finalist in the Pancyprian Piano Competition for young pianists, Steinway Club Cyprus (2000), Praise in the Pancyprian Piano Competition for young pianists, Steinway Club Cyprus (1998).

He is currently a scientific collaborator of the European University of Cyprus, an affiliated researcher of the BoCCF Research Centre for Cultural Sustainability, a research associate of the CYENS Centre of Excellence and a music teacher at the American International School of Cyprus.

His research interests focus on exploring music primarily as the social activity of performance. His recent compositions examine the relationships between performers, audience and performance space, by addressing the function of the fourth wall as part of musical performance and experimenting with its non-sonic constituents.
